Occasional licenses to sell alcohol at events or gathering are not a permanent greenlight that allows holders to trade in booze.

This was the warning from the MEC of Economic Development in the Gauteng province Tasneem Motara while on an outreach program in Sebokeng, Zone 14 in Gauteng.

She warned that doing so in an abuse of the measure as it is only meant to allow event organizers to sell alcohol at their functions in order to raise funds.

“We only issue the occasional licenses for temporary use during events if for example organizers wish to raise funds selling alcohol during their stokvels or similar events, but these are not permanent licenses and we find our people using them as if they are licensed alcohol traders,” she said.

She added: “We are not like the home affairs or traffic departments where one can get a temporary ID or drivers’ license to use while waiting.”

During the question and answer session attendants queried Motara about a variety of issues including the challenge of foreign business nationals in Sedibeng, lack of support from the local authorities as well as being overlooked for financial support and funding.
