A freak accident near Boipatong, Vaal Triangle in Gauteng claimed an innocent life of a young soccer player returning from a match in Sebokeng on Sunday.

The tragic accident happened as the young lad, whose name has not been published, was sitting at the back of a bakkie carrying members his soccer team when the vehicle overturned near Vanderbijlpark.

The accident has left the community reeling in shock while messages of condolences have been pouring from across social median platforms in the Vaal.

The late boy was from Sebokeng.

Resident Nthabiseng Zwane said it is always hard to swallow news of the loss of a young person to road carnage.

She said: “The loss of a young life like this is devastating for everyone involved. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Meanwhile police in the area have confirmed they are investigating a case of Culpable Homicide.

The wreak from the accident on the Golden Highway behind Accelor-Mittal Corporation stood as testimony of the fatal accident.

Sedibeng Cluster police spokesman, Captain Teboho Lephoto, the team was traveling from Muvhango towards Sebokeng when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

This is while apparently trying to overtake another car.

“The bakkie rolled multiple times, resulting in injuries to several players and tragically claiming the life of one player at the scene,” said Lephoto.

Lephoto added that the driver of the bakkie also succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a local hospital.

“The police and medical personnel were summoned quickly, and numerous players were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, including the driver himself. Later, the police were informed that the driver also succumbed to his injuries,” stated Lephoto.
