DENEYSVILLE – Amid Metsimaholo Local Municipality proposed name changes of Deneysville and the Gawie de Beer Game Reserve, Democratic Alliance (DA) in the district is unhappy and concerned about the community losing its heritage.
According to DA’s Dr Igor Scheurkogel he said that the Free State Department of Sports, Arts and Culture had initiated the proposed name changing without taking into consideration the community’s rich history and public participation, although the community was informed of the intend to change names of these significant landmarks, he said on the 11th of September 2024.
Scheurkogel further explained that the notification letter from the Free State Provincial Geographical Names Committee had already passed on 5th of September 2024 six days before the community was informed. Igor continued to elaborate that according to law the affected community should be given at least 14 days to submit objections and inputs hence this violated the requirements of name changing.
DA along with the local community joined forces to support a petition to stop these changes which will be submitted to the Free State Legislature’s Petitions Committee.

It’s high time South Africa change the face of apartheid and create a more African inclusive names of all colonial towns. What heritage are they talking about?
