SASOLBURG – MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlement, Mr. Saki Mokoena visited the Boiketlong Flats in Zamdela at Sasolburg in the Fezile Dabi district on the 05 August 2024. Over the weekend the block of flats which were illegally occupied without permission caught fire which resulted in two people losing their lives and three more being hospitalized.
MEC Mokoena was accompanied by the MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Mr. Jabu Mbalula, the Executive Mayor of Fezile Dabi District Municipality, Cllr Dennis Khasudi, Executive Mayor of Metsimaholo municipality Cllr Jack Malindi, Speaker of Metsimaholo municipality Cllr Lucas Fisher, Council Whip, Cllr Fikile Msokweni, councilors, senior managers of the provincial departments and the municipality, South African Police Services (SAPS) and different Stakeholders, purpose of the visit was to conduct an oversight at the affected flats, and to interact with some of the victims who are hospitalized from injuries sustained during the incident.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and the MEC directed a swift response for all relevant stakeholders to help those affected by the incident, while the Executive Mayor of Metsimaholo Municipality, Cllr Jack Malindi committed in provide support to every individual affected by the disaster, to repair and rebuild Boiketlong flats.
