VANDERBJILPARK – The Emfuleni local municipality on Monday 26th of August 2024, left more than 100 households in limbo after it cut off power to the non-paying residents. This was part of the local municipality intensifying its revenue collection efforts in Riverbend.
The joint switch off operation which target electricity theft and non-payment of services to the municipality was launched by the MMC for Finance and Revenue, Cllr. Hassan Mako, which started on the 5th of August 2024 in SE 7.
It was revealed during the operation that all non-payments and electricity theft debt had accumulated close to R20 million rands.
According to Mako the operation will continue until all areas under Emfuleni Municipality are covered and cleared “There are a high number of households in this area that owe the municipality millions of rands. As we were about to disconnect, we saw a lot of bridging and a lot of illegal connections.” Explained MMC Mako.
