EVATON – SBK Gym held a fun walk from Evaton Mall to Evaton Cemetery in an effort to raise cancer awareness.
October is recognized as a Breast cancer month, but the SBK Gym also recognized other types of cancer, encouraging community members to wear any color that represented each type of cancer in honoring loved ones alive and those who lost the battle to cancer in the past.
The following colors represent each kind of cancer that most people currently battle with on daily basis:
*Pink for Breast Cancer
*Blue for Prostate Cancer
*Orange for Leukemia
*Purple for All Cancers
*Teal for Ovarian Cancer
Informative booths were stationed at Evaton Soccer Park, were guest speakers including Cancer Survivor, Lionel Lepote addressed the crowd “My first experience being at the tender of about 13/14, I remember pushing my grandmother on a wheelchair into Baragwanath Hospital. A very strong woman who succumbed to this demon, cervical cancer. Then, it was my grandfather. The worst experience was a result of the best experience. My ex-wife, Breast cancer. My mother followed, lung cancer,” said Lepote.
“For us who are infected and affected by Cancer, we have come to realize that this is a ‘visitor’ that never intends to leave,” he added.
