During operation Shanela that was led by the Sedibeng District Commissioner Brigadier AB Nkwashu, a total of 117 suspects were arrested for various crime out of which 86 individuals were charged on serious offenses that included murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, common robbery and gender-based violence in Sharpeville, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging while roadblocks, stop and search operations, inspection of liquor outlets and secondhand dealers were conducted.
The Shanela operation brought together a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement agencies and community organizations.
Sharpeville Police Spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango praised the teamwork that contributed to the success of the operation and assured the community that they will continue to intensify crime-fighting measures in the district while further explained that the suspects arrested will appear at Vereeniging Magistrate Court soon.
